Teacher: Mr. Brian Hobbs Email: Room: ART Room (in the Middle School Building)
This is an exciting class, and you are going to have the most memorable year you have ever had; as a result, you will succeed in this class! This art class is designed to emphasize the following areas: discipline, technical skill, design, composition, problem solving, conceptual thinking, creativity, aesthetics, art history, presentation, safety, and visual culture. My goal as a teacher is to provide you with a safe environment that allows you to grow as a student and as an artist. My hope is that all of you will find appreciation for art and embark on a journey of self-respect, self-reflection, growth, tolerance, and academic success.
Course Description: This class provides directed hands-on opportunities to discover, learn and refine one's knowledge and skill in drawing, the use of color, and sculpture. Assignments are given which require a variety of observational, abstract, and imaginative work, and although the curriculum implies the need for pre-planned studies, opportunities for spontaneity are also provided.
VIRTUAL LEARNING: In case of school closure, quarantine, or if you're learning virtually you will be responsible to work from home online. All classroom lessons will be posted in Veracross. You will expected to be familiar with Google email, Zoom, Google Meets, Flipgrid, and have access to the Art website. It is important to reach out and communicate if you have health issues and participation/attendance issues so I can work out individualized plans. For those students who are working from home please join the FLIPGRID virtual class below and say 'hello'.
FLIPGRID CLASS CODE: hobbs5816 : You will be required to 'check-in' twice a week and keep me updated on your projects.
Face Masks and Social Distancing: Facial coverings are mandatory in campus buildings, and so they are required to be worn while in the classroom and during class. All faculty, staff, students, and visitors are required to wear cloth face coverings in all hallways, elevators, public spaces, and common areas, and when entering all buildings. In class we will be practicing social distancing (at least six feet of physical separation between yourself and others) to help slow the spread of Covid 19.
We will also be:
Practicing good personal hygiene, including washing hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap is unavailable.
Routinely clean and sanitize your work space and shared equipment.
Grading All assignments will be posted on our Veracross website, which will be updated by the end of each week. There will also be a guideline sheet or rubric passed out for every final project to ensure you know what you’re being assessed on. If you are unsatisfied with a grade you receive on a project, as long as it is handed in on time, you may rework it for an improved grade.
Class Participation = 50% Portfolio = 25% Projects = 25%
Class Participation 50% Participation points will be given each day. A student can earn participation points by being on task, staying focused, participating in class discussions, posting comments in Google classroom (if used) and by cleaning after themselves. Students are expected to clean their tables and work areas before they leave. If a student chooses not to meet the expectations of the class they will not receive their points. If a student is tardy and choose not to participate and clean-up they will not receive points. Note: At the end of the school year students will participate in an ALL school art show. Students are expected to participate and help with the show.
Absences: Please contact me one week in advance of any anticipated absences to ensure you are up-to-speed with coursework. If sick, recovery is your primary responsibility, but do reach out to me when you are feeling better so I can help you catch up.
Projects/Artwork: 25% Students are expected to keep all of the artwork completed in class. All artwork must be kept neatly without rips, tears, folds, and kept in pristine condition. All artwork must be photographed by the student and uploaded in the online portfolio. At the end of the last grading period students will turn an online art portfolio as the final exam. All of the artwork will be framed and matted and hung around the school. Many of the artwork will be entered in art contests.
Final Exam Portfolio 25% We will start the portfolio assignment the first week of class. As artwork is finished the student is responsible to upload the artwork in the portfolio for grading. At the end of the semester students will present the online portfolio to the teacher as the 'final exam'. If students have demonstrated effort on ALL projects students will earn a passing grade. Everything must be organized and well-kept in order to receive all the necessary points to pass.
