Practice:
Bring a tool box full of unique construction tools. Have students choose one that the best relate with. Practice drawing quick thumbnail sketches of the tool then rotate the tools around the room. Have students draw the next tool using a different medium (pen, charcoal, pencil, ink, etc.) Practice mark making by using the crosshatching techniques, hatching, stippling, and blending techniques and whatever expressive marks they want to try. Encourage students to add a lot of contrast in the work. Express how the background values can automatically add edges to objects. Take about highlights and light sources. Show artwork done by Jim Dine so they can see the clean edges and expressive detail of his style. Talk about imperfection of the tools and the layering process.
