The Project:
1. Do a Google search and find a good quality image of your hero, celebrity, athlete or someone you look up to. Copy and paste it in a Google Doc and print it out (you can also use magazines if you want). (This project was done on 12" x 18" paper, so really the kids stuck to portraits and not so much full body.) P 2. Precisely cut out the person's portrait using scissors with EXCELLENT CRAFTSMANSHIP (showed the students how to use scissors... sounds weird, but it's something you just have to do). Carefully cut the persons hair from the portrait. This can be tricky depending on the photo- sometimes the hair is draping across shoulders or what not. Also, really talk about what craftsmanship means. 3. Glue the portrait to the paper using EXCELLENT craftsmanship. (don't glue it in the middle of the paper). 4. Draw the outline of the hair using pencil. 5. Break up the INSIDE of the hairstyle into corresponding shapes using pencil. For example, if the hairdo is geometric, then the shapes inside need to be geometric (best way to easily determine if students understand the difference between geometric and organic). Show Zentangle patterns for ideas. 6. Students trade in ID for an ultra fine sharpie and may then begin line designs inside the shapes- though the lines also need to be corresponding with geometric or organic. They can use different line weights if they want, but should use the ultra fine sharpie OR a pen works great, too! 7. The background should be broken into the OPPOSITE shapes (if hair is geometric, the background should be organic). Using medium line weight, outline in sharpie. (The only outline that is a thick line weight is the outline of the hair. 8. The background shapes should be filled in with corresponding lines types using a light line weight in ultra fine sharpie or pen. |
Step 1: Find an image. You can use magazine or find one from the internet. Cut out the face only. Glue the face on the paper provided.
|
Step 2: Draw simple line design where the hair needed to go. Use different lines to add clothes to your artwork.
|
Step 3: Add color. Use 2-3 colors and shade in the 'hair' using dark to light values. Use different colors for the clothes.
