Step by Step 1. Lightly draw out the major folds 2. Use graduated shading so that there is a smooth transition from light to dark 3. Add the mid-tones, leaving the highlights 4. Remember to continually studying the fabric to see how the shadows change 5. Deepen the areas that are darker 6. Step back and check for strong contrast 7. Avoid strong outlines - fabric folds are rounded and soft 8. Use a kneaded eraser to clean up the highlights if needed

Observation Tips 1.. Really look at the fabric.
Determine the type of fabric fold
Compression - created by pressure from an arm, object, etc. (think about the wrinkles created by a bent arm)
Hanging - Fabric that drapes between two attached areas
Pipe - Loose fabric that is hanging (a flag or curtain)
3. Consider the light source 4. Look for value changes (highlight, mid-tones, deep shadows, reflected light)
