TASK 2: DEMONSTRATE Watch the video (scroll down) called "Shading Techniques" this will help you understand how to make a value scale. Next, On a sheet of paper, at the top, label this assignment, "4 Shading Techniques". Measure 4 rectangles that are 1 inch x 5 inches (similar to what is shown on the video) Add 5 boxes in each rectangle that are 1 in x 1 in. (similar to what is shown on the video). Label one scale the hatching technique, cross hatching technique, stippling technique and the blending technique. Shade each of the scale using a different shading technique,. Shade from dark to light for example: Black, dark grey, grey, light grey, and white. Avoid jumps with the shades. Take your time and do your best work. A high level of craftsmanship and quality is expected.
TASK 3: MAKE A VIDEO CHECK- IN: 4/3: Finish your value scales and create a FLIPGRID video that show your scales. Explain in the video: Define in your own word the following: hatching technique, crosshatching technique, stippling technique, and blending technique. Which technique did you like the best? Which is your least favorite?
Objective: Students will make a power point and identify different shading techniques in artworks.
TASK 1: MAKE A POWER POINT Look Make a copy of thisgoogle power point and use it as a guide for your own power point. If it doesn't download you can read the instruction below. Use Google Slide and create a power point and include the following:
Slide 1: Title Page, call this presentation, 'Shading Techniques in Art". Add your first and last name and grade. Next, find an image of the crosshatching technique, hatching technique, stippling technique, and blending technique and insert them in the slide. Label the shading techniques.
Slide 2: Find a famous artwork by MC Escher and place it in slide 2. Include the name of the artist and title of the artwork. Next, identify 3 areas on the image where the cross hatching technique is used. Use the arrow shape and point it at the areas. Label the areas crosshatching 1,2 and 3. Look at the example below,
Slide 3: Find a famous artwork by Albert Durer and place it in slide 3; Include the name of the artist and title of the artwork. Next, identify 3 areas on the image where the hatching technique is used. Use the arrow shape and point it at the areas. Label the areas hatching 1,2 and 3.
Slide 4: Find a famous artwork by Georges Seurat and place it in slide 4; Include the name of the artist and title of the artwork. Next, identify 3 areas on the image where the stippling technique is used. Use the arrow shape and point it at the areas. Label the areas stippling 1,2 and 3.
Slide 5: Find a famous artwork by Leonardo Da Vinci and place it in slide 5; Include the name of the artist and title of the artwork next to the image. Next, identify 3 areas on the image where the blending technique is used. Use the arrow shape and point it at the areas. Label it blending example 1, 2, and 3.
Include transitions, background colors, etc. Make it look as nice and professional as possible. Share with me your powerpoint when your finished.
TASK 2: MAKE A VIDEO Select your favorite artwork that was in your power point presentation. Do some research on that artwork and artist and find 3 facts about the artist and 3 facts about the artwork. Include things like: Where is the artist from? When did he die? What medium does he like to use? What techniques did he use? etc.. Next, make a FLIPGRID video and share your information. When you make the video insert an image of the artwork in the corner of your video. Look at the example below.
Shading Techniques for Drawing
Techniques used for applying shading to an object are quite varied. Each technique produces a different texture and "feel" to the drawing. The drawing medium used may determine the shading technique that is applied in the drawing.
The most common application techniques include: Hatching - Lines drawn in the same direction. By drawing lines closer together, darker values are created. Leaving more space between lines results in lighter values. For rounded objects, the lines may curve slightly around the form - following the contours of the object.
Cross-Hatching - Lines cross over each other. The density at which the lines cross over each other determines the value that is produced.
Stippling - Applying countless small dots to build up darker values in a drawing. The density of the dots determines the value produced.
Blending - Smooth gradations of value are produced either by adjusting the amount of pressure applied to the medium or by using a blending tool, such a blending stump.
Project: Shade Shapes Use a piece of paper and divide it into 4 equal parts. (Look at the example below). In one area draw or trace a circle, in another area draw a cone, in another area draw a cube, and in the last area draw a cylinder. Shade each shape with a different shading technique: Cross hatching, hatching, stippling, and blending. You can use colored pencils if your want or pencil. Shade from light to dark. In each shape show me a black, dark grey, grey, light grey and white. Look at the examples below.
